The home features a unique open floor plan with soaring 24 ft ceilings, hand hewed local timber beams, tongue and groove ceilings, brick floors and huge picture windows throughout.


This custom home was originally designed by a Sandia Labs physicist and built between 1993 and 1997. The home and guest house are constructed using a super structure of timber much like the historic barns of long ago. The craftsman timber structure has no nails or metal joints but uses mortise-and-tenon joints which are secured with wooden pegs in the traditional way. The exterior walls are a modern fabricated SIP system (structurally insulated panels) which compresses dense insulation foam between wood panels. These are finished with drywall on the interior and fire resistant concrete stucco on the exterior. This creates a highly insulated home that is efficient to heat and cool. The home is perfectly angled to maximize solar gain for passive heating in the winter. The open concept of the floor plan allows windows and panels to be opened for cross venting to cool with the mountain breeze in the summer
